FARAWAY EDDIE

Eddie was amateur puppy of the year for the South Georgia Circuit and also was second in the Dixie Puppy Classic.   He did not compete in his  derby year after he he developed the notion that field trial behavior didn't have to match home training behavior.  That attitude was reasonably adjusted by his first year all-age.  At that time, however, he developed acquired autoimmune syndrome which, if not diagnosed and treated, would have been fatal.  That kept him on the sidelines for over a year.  In essence that condition caused his own antibodies to destroy his thyroid hormones as fast as they were produced.  Among the many manifestations of that was the rendering of his tail to such carriage that he could not have been competitive.  He now is on twice daily thyroid hormone therapy which has almost completely rectified the situation.  The puppy picture above shows him before he had the condition and the other two after being on Soloxin. It would be disrespectful of him to have shown what the no thyroid hormone condition did to him. Needless to say he carried his tail down below the horizontal with the it being upside down C shaped with the tip pointing forward; he pointed with it at 7:30.   Behaviorally before the treatment he worked like a foot gun dog that had been hunting all-day.  I was warned by the vets that one of the effects of the treatment would that I would have a handful of a dog if I tried running him in field trials... that has proven to be an accurate prediction as he hasn't finished in judgement post treatment (has run twice). The upside of all of this was that the folks at Auburn and my local vet told me that in all likelihood it was not an inherited condition.. that they were not certain of it but it is believed to be caused by a virus.   By "upside" the implication is that he is fine to use for breeding purposes.
